English 9

This course is structured to give students the ability to write literary commentary essays and to critique various works of literature. Topics covered include: essay writing, delivering presentations, analysing speeches, short stories, and various works of American literature.

English 10

This course familiarizes students with a comprehensive overview of literary elements and analytical techniques important for AP Literature or Language classes. Topics covered include: Shakespearean and other world literature, poetry, short stories, and various styles of essays.

English 11

This course is designed to support the learner’s appreciation of literature, and development as a critical reader and thinker, and as a competent writer. As such, the course will prepare students for exemplary performance in college level work of every subject in an English-medium educational environment. In this course, students will be required to develop good academic habits and learn to confidently use the tools required for advanced reading and communication in English and English-speaking cultures.

English 12

AP English Language & Composition

The AP English Language and Composition course aligns to an introductory college-level rhetoric and writing curriculum, which requires students to develop evidence-based analytic and argumentative essays that proceed through several stages or drafts. Students evaluate, synthesize, and cite research to support their arguments. Throughout the course, students develop a personal style by making appropriate grammatical choices. Additionally, students read and analyze the rhetorical elements and their effects in non-fiction texts, including graphic images as forms of text, from many disciplines and historical periods.

English Electives

Journalism

This is a multi-media course, which provides an overview of the basic elements of traditional and digital journalism . The class will explore the different sections of the traditional newspaper and much of the class output will be used for a SSI newspaper and the yearbook. Additionally, students will be tasked with producing a digital newsletter, traditional newspaper, and a yearbook for the SSI community at large. By the end of the course, students should have a general understanding of how to interview, investigate, and create compelling stories and articles for a diverse audience. They will also understand the process by which published texts such as newspapers and yearbooks are created.

Critical Reading I

Critical Reading I is designed to prepare students for the Reading, Listening, Speaking, and Writing sections of the TOEFL. The purpose of this course is to familiarize students with these sections of the TOEFL and develop strategies for solving different prompt types. Students will also have the opportunity to explore a range of popular topics on culture, environmental science, psychology, biology, and social science. They will share and develop their opinions through research and group discussions.

Critical Reading II

Critical Reading II is designed to prepare students for the Evidence-Based Reading and Writing section and Essay portion of the SAT along with the English, Reading, and Writing tests of the ACT. The purpose of this course is to familiarize students with these sections of the SAT and ACT and develop strategies for solving different prompt types. Students will develop their reading and writing skills through reading and discussion, projects, and practice tests.

ESL Program

Accelerated Reading (AR)

This course is tailored specifically to readers who wish to improve their reading ability. By partaking in this individualized reading program, students will read at an accelerated pace and receive personal guidance for improving their comprehension, vocabulary, critical thinking and analysis.

English Reading I & II

These courses are multi-media reading and critical thinking courses, which provides an overview of the basic elements of academic reading, writing and presentation. We will survey a broad range of topics, from economics to the environment, through watching and reading texts based on Ted Talks of world-renowned experts. Furthermore, there will be many opportunities to collaborate with classmates on projects that critically discuss and explore controversies in our ever-changing world. By the end of the course, students should have a general understanding of how to critically read texts, draw conclusions and make inferences based on details. Students will get a good grasp of the basic elements of both persuasive and informative reading.

English Speaking I & II

These courses are multi-media listening, speaking, and critical thinking courses, which provides an overview of the basic elements of academic and informal speech and presentation. A survey of a broad range of topics, from science to history, with many listening and written examples representative of particular time periods, cultures and noted scholars. By the end of the course, students should have a general understanding of how to make and present a persuasive argument in a presentation or debate. Furthermore, students will get a good grasp of the basic elements present in spoken English.

English Writing I & II

These courses provide beginning ELL students with the opportunity to develop their writing skills. In this course, students will learn the process of writing, from brainstorming to editing for the final draft, along with common vocabulary words that are relevant to the topics covered in the course. Students will practice generating sentences about various topics and learn to revise their work. By the end of the course, students will be prepared to construct paragraphs that discuss a topic.

셰익스피어, 햄릿 등 영미 고전문학으로 유명한 작품들을 비평적으로 읽고 분석하는 수업입니다. 주로 에세이 라이팅, 프레젠테이션, 분석으로 말하기, 짧은 스토리 작성하기 등의 과제가 주어지며 영어 실력과 비평적 독해 실력을 동시에 향상시킬 수 있는 영문학 기초 수업입니다.

영미문학에 대한 종합적인 이해를 목표로 하는 수업으로, AP English Literature 준비를 목표로 하는 학생들이 수강하기 적합합니다. 셰익스피어와 세계 고전문학, 시, 단편소설, 에세이 등을 비평적으로 독해하며 글의 주제, 작가의 문제, 시대적 배경 등 영미문학을 입체적으로 공부할 수 있는 시간입니다.

English 11 수업에서는 영미문학을 제대로 해석하는 방법을 공부하면서 비평적 사고와 읽기능력, 쓰기 능력을 향상시킬 수 있습니다. 또한 영어로 의사 소통하는 방법, 영어 교육환경에 대한 이해를 통해 미국 등 해외대학교에서 진행되는 영어 수업을 제대로 이해할 수 있도록 준비합니다.

AP English Language & Composition

AP English Language & Composition은 대학 수준의 수사학, 영작문 기초 수업입니다. 이 수업에서 학생들은 자신이 주장하는 바를 세우고 이를 에세이로 작성하기 위해 논문, 기타 자료 등을 통해 자신의 의견을 뒷받침해 줄 수 있는 근거를 찾아야 합니다. 또한 다양한 문법체계를 활용하여 에세이를 작성해 봄으로써 자신에게 가장 잘 어울리는 문체를 구사할 수 있게 됩니다. 마지막으로 다양한 글에서 나타나는 수사학적 요소를 분석하고, 그 효과를 파악해 봄으로써 수사학적 지식도 쌓을 수 있습니다.

Journalism

전통 저널리즘과 디지털 저널리즘을 구성하는 기본 요소에 대해 공부해 보는 수업입니다. 특히 전통 저널리즘의 대표인 신문의 각종 섹션 특징을 공부한 다음 해당 지식을 SSI 뉴스레터 제작이나 Yearbook 제작 등에 실제로 활용할 수 있도록 하는데 중점을 두고 있습니다. 이러한 활동을 통해 학생들은 다른 사람을 인터뷰 하는 방법, 특정 사건에 대해 조사하는 방법과 함께 다양한 독자들의 시선을 사로잡을 수 있는 매혹적인 스토리 작성법 등을 익힐 수 있습니다. 또한 Yearbook, 신문 제작 과정에 직접 참여해 봄으로써 제작 프로세스에 대한 이해와 관련 지식을 쌓는 것이 가능합니다.

Critical Reading I

Critical Reading I 은 TOEFL 시험에 출제되는 리딩, 리스닝, 라이팅, 스피킹 네 개 영역을 공부할 수 있는 시간입니다. 선생님이 일방적으로 가르치기 보다는 학생들끼리 팀을 구성하여 각 영역별 문제 유형을 파악하고, 유형별 문제 풀이 방법을 찾아내는 방식의 영어 몰입식 토론수업이 진행됩니다. 또한 시험에 자주 출제되는 미국 문화, 환경과학, 심리학, 생물학, 사회학 관련 전반적인 지식도 함께 공부하여 TOEFL 시험을 보다 효과적으로 준비할 수 있습니다.

Critical Reading II

Critical Reading II 시간에는 SAT시험의 Evidence-Based Reading and Writing,  에세이 영역,  ACT시험의 영어, 리딩, 라이딩 영역을 공부할 수 있습니다. 학생들은 기존에 출제 됐던 문제 유형들을 분석하고, 어떻게 풀어 나가면 좋을지에 대해 각자 생각하고 토론하면서  SAT, ACT시험에 대한 통합적 사고 능력을 기를 수 있습니다.  또한 시험 전에는 모의 테스트를 통해 학생들 스스로 자신의 현재 실력을 체크하고 부족한 점을 보완할 수 있도록 지도합니다.
