Foreign Language – Chinese

Chinese I

This course takes the students from beginner to low-intermediate level. It is designed to introduce students to the Mandarin Chinese language and aspects of Chinese culture. Students will be taught the fundamental phonetic system of Pin Yin, four tones and a focus on communicative activities that will build their vocabularies in speaking, listening, reading and writing. Many techniques and strategies will be employed: role playing, game, real situational dialogue, oral, reading and writing activities, and threaded discussions and practice activities. Additionally, a variety of teaching resources will be used – movies, real science, songs, short stories, among others – to assist students in learning and practicing Chinese.

Chinese II

This course takes the students to intermediate level. This course is designed to help students to reach intermediate level communicative skill in spoken and written Chinese and to establish a solid base for more advanced language learning. By increasing the student’s vocabulary and their knowledge of sentence patterns, students can improve their reading, writing, speaking and listening skills using fun activities such as making movies, creating situational dialogue , games and role playing. Students also will learn Chinese culture by making Chinese traditional stuff or cooking Chinese food.

Chinese III

This course takes the students from the intermediate to the advanced level. Students will develop proficiency in all four language skills: listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Students study topics in the textbook and additionally learn how to use what they have learned in class in a culturally appropriate context as if they are in real situations. Therefore, students are required to perform a series of communicative activities and write tasks in social situations. The course will offer various activities, such as making Chinese movies, real situational dialogue, games, and role playing. Students also will learn Chinese culture by making Chinese traditional stuff and by cooking authentic Chinese food.

AP Chinese Language & Culture

AP Chinese Language & Culture is a theme-based two-semester course that is equivalent to the 4th semester college Chinese course. It provides students, typically in their fifth year of Chinese language study (or with equivalent experience), a deeper understanding of the Chinese language and culture. The goal is to take a holistic approach to the language acquisition of Interpersonal, Interpretative, and Presentation Communicative Skills specified in the National Standards for Foreign Languages.

Foreign Language – Spanish

Spanish I

This course is designed to introduce basics Spanish language skills and to provide students with foundation of vocabulary, idiomatic expressions, grammar, and pronunciation abilities upon which they will build in each level of study. Emphasis will be placed on communicating in the target language; therefore, in this course, students will be encouraged to speak in Spanish as much as possible. Units will focus on building cultural awareness, making interdisciplinary connections, drawing comparisons between languages and cultures, and learning to use the target language within our SSI community and abroad.

Spanish II

This course is designed to increase basics Spanish language skills and to provide students with foundation of vocabulary, idiomatic expressions, grammar, and pronunciation abilities upon which they will build in each level of study. Emphasis will be placed on communicating in the target language; therefore, in this course, students will be encouraged to speak in Spanish as much as possible. Units will focus on building cultural awareness, making interdisciplinary connections, drawing comparisons between languages and cultures, and learning to use the target language within our SSI community and abroad.

Spanish III

This course is designed to increase and achieve advance Spanish language skills and to provide students with foundation of vocabulary, idiomatic expressions, grammar, and pronunciation abilities upon which they will build in each level of study. Emphasis will be placed on communicating in the target language; therefore, in this course, students will be encouraged to speak in Spanish as much as possible. Units will focus on building cultural awareness, making interdisciplinary connections, drawing comparisons between languages and cultures, and learning to use the target language within our SSI community and abroad.

AP Spanish Language & Culture

The course is divided into thematic units which are further based on recommended contexts and guided by essential questions. Corresponding cultural elements are integrated into the study of the units, and activities are directed with those cultural connections in mind. Discussion of the topics completely in Spanish is a requirement for this course. It is assumed that students have previously been exposed to advance language structures in the courses leading up to the AP Spanish Language and Culture course; however, review of the mechanics is done within the contextual framework of each unit as needed.
